Digital twins are virtual replicas of real-world assets that faithfully simulate their physical principles and behavior within a virtual environment.

Digital twins provide a long-term competitive advantage for an organization by facilitating innovation, analysis, productivity improvements, and risk mitigation.

Benefits of Digital Twins

It is possible to develop simulations in real time synchronized with the physical world using Digital Twins.

As it is a virtual environment, it is possible for employees in different locations to interact and collaborate remotely in a virtual model of the company, industrial plant, or office environment.

Unlimited what-if testing allows problems to be diagnosed and resolved in advance. The data generated and the possibility of continuous monitoring provide increased productivity and improved efficiency, reducing operating costs.

With digital twins, it is possible to simulate critical scenarios and improve understanding of exposure to the risk of work accidents.

Digital Twins also allow companies to test and validate products or entire production lines before they even exist in the real world, which reduces project execution time and improves decision-making.

Effectiveness of Digital Twins

Digital twins provide insights, both numerical and visual, that help designers, engineers, and other stakeholders visualize projects and data in ways never before possible, leading to ideas on how to achieve better results in less time. Large companies are already using digital twins, producing some practical results, such as:

  • 20% faster time-to-market due to simplified and automated warehouse design tool (creating a warehouse structure decreased from 12 weeks to 2 hours) (

  • 85% reduction in workforce needed for design processes (

  • test intensity up to 10x magnified (

  • Acceleration of definition of critical processes up to 30%

Digital twins can be used to create digital replicas of products, processes (production lines), industrial complexes or entire cities (smart cities). By using (IoT) to link the model to its physical counterpart and understand how the entity changes over time, this technology is already being applied in the following industries:

  • Construction

  • Mining

  • Automotive

  • Aeronautics

  • Logistics

  • Healthcare

  • Manufacturing industries

The first step in the process is to clearly define the purpose and desired results with the Digital Twins. The assembly of the virtual strategy aims to ensure the relevance of the experience.

In the case of Digital Twins, the following should be considered:

  • Purpose

  • Goals and objectives

  • Number of modeled assets

  • Level of graphic details

  • Programming for interoperability

  • Data selection

  • Assembling the IT team: security, IoT and device management

  • Devices and software

Technical development is when we do all the 3D modeling and refinements of the assets that will be the virtual representation of the Digital Twins.

In parallel with the three-dimensional modeling, we analyze and program all the actions that the physical asset performs. This way, we create an interoperability of the software involved, ensuring the replication and synchronicity in real time of the behavior of the physical assets in the virtual world.

The design and art phase is when we program the shaders (real-time behavior of materials), choose materials, test lighting types and introduce audio elements. This phase is sensitive for the virtual experience to be successful as it requires realism of the elements (polishing, porosity, anisotropy, reflections, etc.) and speed in data processing.

We work with platforms designed for this use, such as Nvidia Omniverse and Unreal Engine, that also make it possible to create a graphical interface that is friendly for people who don't have a programming background.

The last phase of our methodology is thoroughness. This is when we carefully analyze all the work already developed with the objective of optimizing the application, mapping possible problems and improving the programming. Attention to detail is intrinsic to VisibleBits and aims to ensure the relevance of the final experience.

The implementation of a Digital Twin in a company requires a multidisciplinary team composed of VisibleBits technicians and those responsible for each area of the company. We take part in every interoperability analysis and process optimization to ensure the final quality of the company's virtualization experience.

As the adoption of digital twins increases in industry and cities, stakeholders will be able to increasingly communicate and collaborate in a shared data environment. This will simplify the way we work on projects and reduce the number of errors that occur.

This will not only allow people to work in teams via remote locations at any time, but also enable data sharing at levels never seen before. This data will ensure a long-term competitive advantage for the organization, in addition to facilitating the promotion of innovations, analysis, productivity improvements and risk mitigation.
